HWY 50 Attractions

Tuesday we left Fallon and headed for Ely. We have made the trip across Nevada on HWY 50 more times than I can count.

About 20 miles east of Fallon is Sand Mountain. It is popular with ATV's and the dune buggy crowd. It is quite the site to see, seamingly a dune alone at the corner of a salt flat.

A very common site in Nevada is dust devils. I took a picture of these two near New Pass Summit, west of Austin about 20 miles. I have never seen a dust devil in Star Valley.

We stopped for a break at Hickison Petroglyphs Recreation area, between Austin and Eureka. We almost always stop either here or at the top of Bob Scott Summit to let the kids run for a while.

The shade of a tree was a popular parking spot. Several cars stopped and enjoyed the site while we were there.

Ruby, Spencer and Preston in the shade of a Juniper tree. They had fun running around on the trails.

Fun in Fallon

We had a great time in Fallon. Seeing Grandma and Grandpa was a highlight of the trip! Especially for the kids. And seeing Ashley and the Grand babies was awesome! We also got to see Glen and Melissa, and James and Eddy. We certainly enjoyed our stay.

Whenever we go back to Fallon we always drive by our old house. It is kind of nostalgic. We have been gone 4 years now, and we have to laugh, the mail box still says 'Howes'.

Ashley on her laptop! Surely she is visiting the 'House of Howes'!

Mellany has her own door! Actually she has to share it with the dogs. Isn't she a cutie?

Where else would you find boys, but playing in the dirt. Spencer, Preston and Wesley having fun getting dirty.

And what a meal we had at the Chinese buffet! Great food and a great time!

Kicking Back in Carlin

As I said in the previous post, we spent the first night of our Nevada trip in Carlin. It is a good 7 hours from Star Valley to Carlin, so we were all happy to relax after a long day on the road.

Do you think Alec is a little camera shy? He was always trying to hide when I had the camera out, which if you ask Angela and the kids is "ALL THE TIME"!

Look at that smile! Ruby and the boys are not camera shy at all. They are hams!

In a rare moment, Spencer is relaxed and quiet! He, and all the kids travel extremely well. It is amazing how well behaved they are while we are in the car. Once we stop it can be a different story. Especially Preston and Spencer. They can be wound up, and it usually takes some time for them to settle down.

Time for bed! Preston and Spencer brushing their teeth and getting ready to hit the hay!

1,600 Miles in Eight Days

I haven't posted for some time, and I have some catching up to do. Last week we were on vacation. We traveled over 1,600 miles over a span of 8 days, and visited relatives all along the way.

Our journey began on Saturday the 9th of August as we traveled from Star Valley to Carlin Nevada. We spent the night there at the Comfort Inn, at a very reduced rate, thanks to Jessica! Thanks again Jessie. We visited breifly with niece Jessica and Brother Jared.

On the 10th we traveled to Fallon Nevada. We stayed in Fallon two nights at the Super 8 motel, again at a reduced rate. Thanks to Wesley! We visited Grandma and Grandpa Wooner, along with Uncle James and Eddy. We also spent time with Ashley, Wesley, and Mellany. What fun we had in Fallon. On Monday we drove to Reno and back and had lunch with Melissa and Glen. It was great to see them again so soon!

Late Tuesday we made the journey back across Nevada, this time on HWY 50 to Ely. We stayed 3 nights with Grandma and Grandpa Howes. Randy, Jared, Trent, Jay and I poured 7 yards of concrete for Grandpa's driveway, and we went out and cut and hauled home 10 pickup loads of wood for Grandpa! you may remember he had an accident earlier this year, so us boys are taking care of his heavy work this summer.

Friday the 15th we drove to SLC and stayed at the Airport Comfort Inn. The kids loved the swimming pool there! And Finally Saturday we made the journey home, via Logan, and Preston Idaho.

I will begin to post photo's over the next few days of the trip!

4H Excellence at the Lincoln County Fair

Ruby has been busy the past week with the fair. She competed in a fashion show and entered two sewing projects, and one baking project in the county fair.

Ruby sewed these pajama bottoms and fashioned them in the fair. She won a 1st place ribbon for the fashion show, and a champion ribbon for the pajamas themselves.

She baked some banana bread and entered it at the fair. She again won the champion ribbon, and reserve champion ribbon for her efforts. Her banana bread is headed to the State Fair! We wish her the best of luck there. I have sampled her bread, and I must say it is a great banana bread indeed.

You may remember my earlier post about her pillow cases. She entered them at the fair and again she won the champion ribbon!

Ruby made quite the showing at the fair this year. She has been smiling from ear to ear all week. She spent a lot of effort on her projects, and it sure payed off!

Congratulations Ruby!

Front Porch Rainbow

We have had some welcome rain showers the past couple of afternoons. Tonight after a brief shower, the sun popped out across the valley and a rainbow formed. Since moving to Star Valley our front porch has provided some spectacular views!

Camp at Poker Hollow

I had promised more pictures of our camping trip. It took me a little longer than I had planned, but here they are.

First thing to do once at camp is to get the tent set up, and here Alec is hard at it....Supervising Ruby, and Spencer!

The kids spent a lot of time swimming, not only at Crystal lake but also in the creek (Smith's Fork), next to our camp. They didn't bring swimming suits so there skivvies had to do! Spencer and Preston are warming up in the sun, after a dip. Spencer's teeth were chattering so hard you could here them all the way on the other side of camp!

The family poses for a picture at Crystal lake. Preston, Ruby, Spencer, Mom, Alec. The water is absolutely 'crystal' clear!

Spencer and Ruby take a dip in the creek! Man was that water cold!

Kicking back and relaxing! Preston enjoys one of the quieter moments in camp.
